Seventeen (17) Gambian nationals, believed to be ‘would-be’ migrants and 67 other nationalities have been arrested by the Senegalese Navy while enroute to Europe through the sea around Marlothie (in the Saloum islands) of Senegal.

A total of 84 would-be migrants: 28 Senegalese, 17 Gambians,14 Malians,13 Somalian nationals,11 Guineans and 1 Nigerian were intercepted and handed over to the National Division for Combating Migrant Smuggling and Related Practices (DNLT) in Senegal. “Among them were 17 women and 3 under-age girls.”

According to the Senegalese police, statements taken from the would-be migrants revealed that the group left Banjul (The Gambia) on the night of 16th June 2025, at around midnight, with Spain as their destination.

“The main organiser of the clandestine journey was said to be a foreign national. The cost of the crossing is said to have varied between 350,000 FCFA and 600,000 FCFA per migrant. As part of the same operation, six (06) people were arrested and placed in police custody for complicity in migrant smuggling,” the Senegalese police disclosed.

Meanwhile, police say the investigations are ongoing to trace the smuggling network and  locate the main smuggler.
