A true custodian of Senegambian heritage, Njok Malick has devoted years to preserving and promoting our rich cultural identity. As Founder and Director of Yaram Arts, he has played an instrumental role in bringing together Gambians from all walks of life through the annual August Cultural Festival in East London—a vibrant testament to community, unity, and tradition.
Njok Malick’s unwavering commitment to cultural inclusion has inspired countless individuals across generations. His contributions extend far beyond event promotion; they reflect a deep-rooted passion for ensuring that Senegambian and African arts continue to flourish in the UK and Europe.
Recently, in recognition of his meritorious service, King Charles III has awarded him the Medal of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours List—a distinction granted on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and the advice of the independent Honours Committee.
Through his leadership, Njok Malick has established himself as a highly respected cultural entrepreneur, festival promoter, and tour manager. His work has introduced Gambian, Senegalese, African, and Caribbean artists to wider audiences, helping to bridge cultures and strengthen community relations. His efforts with Yaram Arts have expanded to collaborations with schools, universities, and art therapy institutions, ensuring that the next generation continues to engage with and celebrate their heritage.
Upon receiving this national accolade, Njok Malick expressed profound gratitude to his partners, including Arts Council England, as well as the artists, audiences, sponsors, and the dedicated team behind Yaram Arts. His leadership continues to shine through initiatives such as the MSDG Project’s professional development program for The Gambia Police Band and the annual homecoming MBOKA Festival, where Yaram Arts has been a proud partner since its inception in 2017.
