Part 1
Fatoumatta: A politician thinks only of the next election, while a statesman envisions the next generation. A politician seeks the fleeting success of their party; a statesman pursues the enduring success of their nation. In this context, the statesman is the navigator, while the politician is content to drift, as noted by James Freeman Clarke. In the heart of The Gambia—a nation steeped in rich culture and history—we find ourselves on the verge of a transformative era. As we approach the 2026 Presidential Election, our collective hopes and dreams converge on the vision of a leader who exemplifies the very spirit of our aspirations. This leader is not merely a figurehead; they are a beacon of hope, a symbol of unity, and a powerful catalyst for progress. The President I envision is a leader who rises above tribal divisions, possesses exceptional leadership qualities, and embodies both education and charisma. This visionary figure will not only safeguard and enhance The Gambia’s democratic achievements but also champion the freedom of the press and drive the socio-economic development of our beloved nation.
I dream of a President who stands as proud and strong as a red lion, a victor aligning their gaze with their stride—someone whose heart remains steadfast to their convictions, whose courage knows no bounds, and who seizes every opportunity for our nation’s advancement. They should mirror the mighty baobab tree, whose utility extends from its leaves to its roots, offering sustenance, shade, and sometimes even fresh water. They must reflect the selfless spirit of a humble mother, lying on her back, generously nurturing her offspring without bias. This President will not bow to the allure of powerful nations, the riches of the wealthy, or the influence of lobbyists. Instead, they will respond compassionately to the struggles of their people, celebrate the innocence of our youth, and be deeply moved by the dignity of the humble. They will be attentive to the grievances of their citizens, keenly observe the harsh realities faced by the most vulnerable, offer unwavering support, and speak wisdom that inspires action. Their unwavering commitment to the people will be evident as they walk boldly through the dust of our roads, tirelessly working to transform our lives.
The President I dream of will rise above denigration, divisive rhetoric, and baseless accusations. They will reflect profoundly, meditate thoughtfully, and pray earnestly. Instead of casting stones, they will sow seeds of hope and virtue. Diligently, they will work to improve our infrastructure, nurture flourishing communities, and spread joy and well-being across the nation. The welfare of the people will always be at the forefront of their concerns, prioritizing education, training, employment, health, and safety. They will tackle the urgent matters of agriculture, livestock, and fisheries while passionately championing the arts, crafts, and culture as fundamental to our emergence. They will recognize men as the backbone of our society, women as its nurturing heart, youth as the architects of our future, and elders as the guardians of our memory. This President will rescue street children, uplift struggling families, and eradicate indignity from our nation.
The President I envision will hold sacred the institutions of the Republic and its rich heritage. They will strive to fortify citizenship, elevate moral standards, enhance governance, and strengthen the democratic process, creating a legacy of civil and social peace for present and future generations. They will promote pan-Africanism, foster understanding, and cultivate solidarity between nations. Most importantly, they will inspire the people to stand tall, reconcile with their past, and work hand in hand for a brighter tomorrow.
Fatoumatta: In conclusion, while I am aware that the next President may not fully embody this vision, I fervently hope they come as close to it as possible and are successful in their mandate. I equally wish the outgoing President strength and inspiration as they transition from office. In the meantime, I remain attentive to the heartfelt desires of my people, closely monitoring the candidates in the electoral campaign and those tirelessly advocating for our democratic process. God watches over The Gambia. As we gaze toward the future, let us remember that the true strength of our nation lies in the unity and determination of its people. Together, we can build a brighter, more prosperous Gambia, led by a visionary who embodies the spirit of our dreams and aspirations.
