Fatoumatta: I do not know when the rain will stop falling on us in Gambia. The Gambia deserves responsible complainers, activists, feminists, and journalists. Sensationalism, sentimentality, emotionalism, and the manufacturing of consent are dangerous in a democracy and constitute an abuse of it. There is no truth to the reported lingering problem or tension between the Gambia and Senegal as some Facebook complainers have suggested. It should be known that in Senegal’s diplomatic priorities, the Gambia is number one, followed by France, Morocco, Guinea Bissau, and then the United States. As an activist, you must understand your country’s foreign policy, history, law, and economics.
In a democratic society, responsible citizenship and activism play vital roles in sustaining social harmony and fostering positive change. It is imperative, however, that these endeavors are based on truth and integrity. Of late, certain opposition groups have been disseminating baseless rumors regarding an alleged issue between the new government of Senegal and The Gambia. These assertions are not only untrue but also detrimental to the bilateral relations of the two countries.
Understanding that the denial of a police permit for a campaign in The Gambia is lawful when probable cause exists is crucial. The police are tasked with upholding public order and safety, and their judgments ought to be upheld. Opposition status does not confer the privilege to provoke unrest or disseminate untruths. Opposition parties ought to concentrate on providing constructive critique and offering feasible options to the incumbent administration.
Being a responsible citizen requires staying informed and critical of the information we disseminate. It entails fact-checking before distribution and resisting the urge to sensationalize or skew the truth for political advantage. Likewise, activism should stem from authentic causes and a dedication to justice and equality, not as a means for personal significance or fame.
Fatoumatta: In summary, responsible citizenship and activism are grounded in a dedication to truth, integrity, and the common good. Through constructive engagement and refraining from disseminating misinformation, we can foster a more enlightened and united community. Let’s endeavor to be conscientious citizens and activists, collaborating to forge a brighter future for The Gambia.
