Fatoumatta: I hold Mr. Mambury Njie in high esteem, an esteemed former Gambian diplomat and Secretary-General. Mr. Njie’s notable career encompasses his tenure as the Finance Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs in two separate administrations, showcasing his extraordinary talent for budget management and revenue generation for national progress. His deep insight into economic policies and strategies has been instrumental in fostering The Gambia’s fiscal stability and development.
Moreover, Mr. Njie’s proficiency is not limited to domestic matters; he is the Special Advisor on Economic & Financial Integration and Partnerships at the ECOWAS Commission in Nigeria. His profound grasp of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the African Development Bank, the Washington Consensus, and the Beijing & Santiago Consensus has been crucial in maneuvering through intricate economic terrains and garnering essential support for development initiatives.
Mr. Njie’s steadfast commitment, comprehensive expertise, and leadership skills have solidified his reputation as a reliable and adept leader. His enduring dedication to public service and his steadfast integrity render him a distinguished figure in the sphere of international economic affairs. I am privileged to endorse Mr. Mam Boury Njie and recognize his significant contributions on both a national and international scale.
One cannot truly understand a person from afar; it is only through meeting and conversing with them that their true self becomes apparent. Although I was aware of Mambury Njie through mutual acquaintances, I never had a close relationship with him during his tenure in the Gambian government. Nonetheless, I kept abreast of his career via the media and his budget presentations as a Minister. It was not until we shared a meal and engaged in meaningful dialogue in New York that I came to know him personally. Moreover, my colleagues at the World Bank and the IMF, who were not from Gambia but had professional interactions with him, consistently praised his capabilities as a technocrat and a professional. Judging those we have not met is unwise.
Fatoumatta: The Gambia is celebrated for its distinguished individuals and professional optimists, including an intellectual colossus, bestowed upon the African continent by the Gambian populace. Mambury Njie, a notable Gambian, commenced and concluded his odyssey in his beloved homeland. In contrast to numerous postgraduates who settle in America, the UK, France, or other Western countries post-study, Mambury Njie opted to return to The Gambia to serve and foster national development.
A seasoned diplomat and civil servant, formerly a Secretary General and presently serving as the Foreign Minister and Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs in two distinct Gambian administrations, Mambury Njie’s emergence as a Pan-African icon is far from serendipitous. The Gambia remains memorable for nurturing some of the finest civil servants and bureaucrats in Africa.
In this regard, as Africans, we owe not only the Gambia and its steadfast citizens a deep sense of appreciation for the nation’s advocacy for public service during challenging times, but we also hold immense gratitude for Mr. Mambury Njie’s significant contributions to the Pan-Gambian economic development and infrastructure initiatives. Mr. Njie’s fervent work ethic and intellectual sophistication, whether as a Diplomat, Secretary General, or Government Minister across two administrations, equipped him to establish benchmarks for Gambia’s economic integration and infrastructural advancement. His efforts infused the Gambia with the energy needed for its people to thrive in a prosperous, borderless continent. Like all influential figures, he made a lasting impact on the institutions and individuals he engaged with, both within the Gambia and internationally. As an administrator, economist, and both a scholar-practitioner and practitioner-scholar, Mr. Njie adeptly traversed these diverse realms with elegance.
Fatoumatta: During his tenure as Finance Minister under Yahya Jammeh and Adama Barrow, Mambury Njie significantly impacted the role, particularly in collaborating with international financial institutions like the World Bank, IMF, Islamic Development Bank, and other multilateral, bilateral institutions, and regional organizations. Njie was instrumental in balancing the budget and generating revenue for development projects, securing financial support, and promoting economic stability in The Gambia. His deep understanding of economic policies and strategic leadership skillfully navigated the complexities of international financial systems, benefiting The Gambia from these partnerships. His work with the World Bank and IMF involved implementing reforms and policies aimed at improving the country’s economic outlook, addressing fiscal challenges, and encouraging sustainable development. Additionally, his collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank initiated various development projects that substantially aided the nation’s growth.
Njie’s contributions have profoundly influenced The Gambia’s economic landscape, demonstrating his commitment to public service and expertise in economic policy. With a clear vision and innovative approach to policy-making, this notable leader has devised and implemented strategies for infrastructural growth and political cohesion. His influence is evident in the Economic Community of West African States, the Lagos Plan of Action, The Gambia’s Alternative Framework to Structural Adjustment Programme, and various World Bank and IMF policies, all bearing the mark of our respected intellectual giant, Mambury Njie. His initiatives, as a visionary leader, were all aimed at carving out avenues for The Gambia’s socio-economic progress.
Fatoumatta: As the people of Africa forge a new path towards economic liberation through the ambitious Agenda 2063, we could have greatly benefited from his sagacity and intellectual guidance. However, his profound legacy, invaluable contributions, and distinguished leadership, particularly his focus on The Gambia’s role in the Pan-African project, offer us consolation and hope. The African proverb says, “Anyone who sees beauty and does not look at it will soon be poor.” In The Gambia, we have recognized the beauty in the work of our esteemed compatriot, Mr. Mambury Njie.
As Gambians, we have immensely enjoyed the fruits of his labor, his extensive knowledge, and his dedication to serving with grace as a son of Africa and a global citizen. Mr. Mambury Njie’s illustrious career dedicated to serving the people of Africa and Gambia has fostered a more self-assured Gambia. His African confidence and heritage pride are palpable. He held the belief that Africa’s confidence would only materialize when the journey towards integration is unyielding, socio-economic advancements are achieved, and effective governance touches numerous lives.
From my perspective, having long respected his economic expertise, exceptional practice, and his influence spanning over two decades, Mambury Njie is a patriotic compatriot, a magnanimous economist, and a guide to many budding economists. Our paths intersected years ago, leading to profound discussions when I joined him for dinner in New York amidst his official duties to the World Bank and the IMF.
Fatoumatta: Following an engaging four-hour conversation over a meal, Mambury Njie has demonstrated that he is both firm and fair, always prepared to provide the necessary intellectual and administrative support in his new role in Nigeria. He harbors the ambitious objective of readying cadres for the future civil service in The Gambia and throughout Africa. He has shared with me his intention to volunteer as a lecturer on economic models at The University of The Gambia after retirement, with the goal of making a substantial impact and imparting his knowledge to the students. Mr. Njie’s dedication, enthusiasm, and professionalism have been instrumental in driving The Gambia’s economic progress, characterized by an urgent and optimistic pursuit of success.
In “The Apology of Socrates,” Plato, the Greek philosopher, presents a dialogue involving his mentor, Socrates. My discussions and interactions with Mr. Njie have been as illuminating as the dialogues between Plato and Socrates. I could compose chapters on the intellectual odyssey of our itinerant civil servant, economist, diplomat, and ex-Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs. It is remarkable how the existence of a single person can so deeply and meaningfully impact the trajectory of the African and Gambian nations.
Fatoumatta: Political regimes may shift, but senior civil servants remain committed to enacting the policies established by the Gambians’ legally and legitimately elected authorities. Mr. Mambury Njie, a former Finance and Economic Affairs Minister whom I encountered in New York and came to know through a professor at Strasbourg University in Pennsylvania, embodies the honor of the Gambia. He has dutifully served his nation across three different administrations, undertaking roles as a civil servant, Secretary-General, diplomat, and twice as a cabinet minister, both as Foreign Minister and Finance Minister. His service was pledged to the institutions of the republic, not to individuals. Mr. Njie’s conduct stands in stark contrast to that of an individual who, despite an age that should bring wisdom, persistently rejects the invaluable virtue of decency, choosing instead to engage in undignified behavior on Facebook and Twitter, reminiscent of a young child. Nevertheless, Mambury Njie will continue to wear the medal of honor, a symbol of patriotism and the republic’s values, with pride.
When Gambians leave government service, many seem to become idle wanderers, spending their abundant free time on social media. In contrast, Mambury Njie serves the State of The Gambia with dignity and patriotism. While some men seek to elevate themselves, others pander to authority, diminishing their worth and becoming jesters of the realm. Mambury, however, belongs to a distinct class marked by dignity and character.
Is it the scenario where capable officials, faithfully serving their nation, are subjected to insults, defamation, and humiliation, or the one where individuals in public life avoid verbal and physical extremes to distinguish patriots from traitors to the homeland? The inclination to degrade public discourse and cast The Gambia into a dichotomy of good versus evil reflects the actions of those who are eroding the republican ideal of all citizens’ equality before the law.
Fatoumatta: Mr. Mambury Njie embodies the honor of The Gambia, upholding republican values and steadfast service to the state as one of its most distinguished models. Devoted republicans, committed to the state’s veneration, the Republic’s supremacy, and the Nation’s indivisibility, face challenges from a multitude of anti-republican expressions and actions. It falls upon us all to confront these challenges, ensuring that the Republic always acknowledges its own. Mambury Njie is among us in this endeavor.
