Inna lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un.
Ensa Badjie has passed away today. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, the people of Foni, fellow Gambians, and the Gambia Police Force. His passing is a loss to be mourned by all. May Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficent, grant him Aljannah Firdaus.
Officer Ensa Badjie, also known as Jesus, was a valiant and exemplary police officer who embodied courage amidst challenges. His dedication to justice was unwavering, and he executed his duties with utmost integrity and compassion. The presence of Ensa Badjie, or Jesus, instilled a sense of safety in the community, and his deeds fostered trust and admiration. As a guardian of the law and a beloved figure in the community, he was always prepared to lend assistance with a warm smile. His modesty was as profound as his valor, marking him as a genuine hero in uniform.
Law enforcement transcends a mere profession; it embodies a calling. It stands as a noble pursuit, characterized by service and selflessness. This path beckons those who earnestly aspire to effect change, exemplified by Officer Ensa Badjie, affectionately known as Jesus, during his tenure with the Gambia Police Force. Amidst hazards and tribulations, Jesus devoted his existence to safeguarding our community and nation. Yet, some ponder the allure of a career in law enforcement.
Robust governance and ethical leadership are pivotal to a just and equitable society. Indeed, exemplary leadership is instrumental in molding the conduct and morale of police officers. Such leadership can motivate and enable individuals or a squad of officers to excel and uphold professional standards, thereby influencing public confidence. In contrast, deficient leadership or kleptocratic governance can engender disconnection and lack of motivation among law enforcement officers, potentially culminating in unprofessional conduct or the rogue behavior of some officers. Hence, it is imperative for leaders to embody positive traits and eschew negative conduct that could demoralize outstanding and professional officers, preventing detrimental consequences.
For the valiant officers in question, it is unfathomable to envision them in any role other than serving their country and its citizens. Numerous individuals join the police force and distinguish themselves in service; a rare few eclipse their peers. Such was the daily commitment of Officer Ensa Badjie, Jesus, in his line of duty. Policing is fraught with peril. Officers constantly confront the unknown, tasked with scrutinizing the dubious, confronting peril, protecting the vulnerable, and thwarting the malevolent. Officer Jesus was acutely aware of these perils and meticulously took measures to ensure safety.
Jesus was a commanding presence, both in his physical stature and his commitment to his role. As an exceptional police officer, he was dedicated to incarcerating criminals and safeguarding lives and property. Those fortunate enough to know him personally and work alongside him characterized Jesus as an officer who consistently gave his all. He stood as a beacon of what it means to be part of the Gambia Police Force, with an unwavering dedication to his duties.
Being a police officer was integral to Jesus’ identity. Universally recognized as a remarkable and upright man, he set himself apart as an outstanding officer through his exemplary performance. His rapid ascent to the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) was fueled by a fervent desire to diminish crime and protect the communities of citizens.
The best tribute we can offer is to perpetuate his legacy and use his life as a model for others, particularly for aspiring and junior officers.
Today, we bid farewell to Jesus, but his memory will not fade with this day. His name is now inscribed on the police memorial, alongside other Gambian Police Officers who fell while serving our community and nation. His sacrifice and patriotic service will be honored for generations to come. Though Jesus has departed from us, his legacy of dedication will always be remembered. May God pardon any of his faults and oversights. May God bless Jesus and grant him eternal peace.
