Analysis: In a country renowned for its impressive democratic credentials, the absence of a FIFA-approved stadium results in the loss of its enchanting football magic for hosting home matches

Fatoumatta: In a country renowned for its impressive democratic credentials, the absence of a FIFA-approved stadium results in the loss of its enchanting football magic for hosting home matches.

It is disheartening that The Gambia, a nation passionate about football, lacks even one FIFA-approved stadium to host home matches and train its players. While I will not delve into other varsity sports and focus solely on football, it is widely acknowledged that sports development in Gambia is challenging. A country may perform well in sports without cutting-edge stadiums, yet quality facilities can greatly improve performance and the overall sports experience. It begs the question: How can a country excel in football without a single superior stadium, especially when it has been a footballing nation since its independence? Despite three regimes, the construction of a modern, state-of-the-art stadium remains elusive. The expectation of outstanding performance from a team that cannot play on its home turf in competitive football seems unrealistic; indeed, having talented players without a stadium is far from ideal.

In a country plagued by divisive politics and economic difficulties, the once vibrant stadium seems to have lost its charm. The football game between Gambia and Gabon offers a momentary solace for a nation grappling with political and economic turmoil. This clash of two football-loving nations serves as a pleasant diversion from the prevailing chaos and despair. As the match unfolds, the air fills with enthusiasm, momentarily lifting the nation’s spirits.

Amidst the turmoil, the youth find comfort in the stirring monologues of populist politics, which deliver sermons on democratic valor and revolutionary fervor at the woods. This time, they are cautious to cross our borders lawfully. With their friends thriving in commerce, they no longer need to risk the perilous life. Amidst the beats and vibrant rhythms, each fan group, donning a hue from the national flag, establishes the mood for the match.

Adequate stadium facilities, like proper lighting, enhance visibility and clarity during games, enabling athletes to excel. Effective lighting is essential for players to follow the ball, assess distances, and react swiftly. Stadiums designed with optimal lighting and layout minimize accidents and injuries, creating a safer space for athletes.

Stadium design also affects the comfort and enjoyment of spectators. Elements such as thermal comfort, encompassing temperature and humidity control, are crucial to the spectator experience. Hosting significant sporting events can elevate tourism, increase global visibility, and encourage cultural exchange.

Stadiums transcend their role as mere venues; they embody national policies and achievements, forging a durable legacy that surpasses the hosted events.

For sports clubs, stadiums are more than venues; they are vital revenue sources, pivotal to financial health and enduring success.

While stellar stadiums alone don’t guarantee sporting triumph, they aid in enhancing performance, safety, audience engagement, economic impact, sustainability, and fiscal stability. Investing in superior sports infrastructure, alongside athlete and team development, can yield a considerable competitive edge.

The defining traits of passionate Gambian fans are unmistakable: our impatience with every play and the bold comments following each match loss. Beauty often skirts the edge of excess, and it was no different here. Youths, brimming with energy, engaged in heated debates with political veterans. It took the new coach, with his commanding presence, to bring a calming influence to the spirited youths and football enthusiasts. The scene was truly memorable.

Fatoumatta: Despite suffering a defeat on Gabon’s pitch, the Scorpions have shown remarkable resilience, instilling hope in a nation yearning for progress. Even in challenging times, the country remains dignified and strong. Long live the Gambia, long live the Scorpions. My loyalty to the Scorpions persists, through good times and bad, in plenty and in need, while I continually long for goals and victories.
