Congratulations to the University of The Gambia’s Class of 2023 graduates! Best wishes on your forthcoming journey. May all your dreams be realized and contribute positively to nation-building. Remember, you are the future leaders and change-makers of our nation, and your efforts will shape our society’s destiny. You have worked incredibly hard to reach this point, and I hope you take a moment to fully appreciate the magnitude of your achievement. It’s also important to recognize that the path ahead may not always be smooth. Challenges and setbacks will arise, but I am confident in your resilience and determination to surmount them.

To the parents of the graduates, the significance of your contribution to their achievements is immense. Your immense pride and joy in your child’s accomplishments are beyond measure. Thus, congratulations are also due to every mother and father; your unwavering support and love have been pivotal in this endeavor! You will also encounter significant choices where knowledge and morality are deeply entwined throughout your life and career. For example, you may be faced with the dilemma of choosing between a well-paying job that conflicts with your principles and a less lucrative one that is in harmony with them.

Additionally, even though such conflicts may not always be as visible, the internal struggle you experience will be just as real, and the impact of your choices just as profound. It is essential to engage in continuous self-reflection to cultivate an understanding of your identity and beliefs, as you never know when you might need to stand by them.

Echoing Arianna Huffington, we must redefine what success means: “Society’s definition of success is failing everyone. It’s failing women, men, polar bears, and even the cicadas that are set to emerge and envelop us.” Your journey is unique; your own definition of success is what truly matters. Pursue it, craft it, and make it work for you. Your role is not to mirror someone else’s talents or views. You are the confidant leaders seek for an honest perspective. As a retired journalist and lecturer, I learned to value the counsel of those who would challenge my views. This underscored the significance of integrity and the bravery required to voice dissenting opinions. As you venture into a realm of boundless opportunities, I encourage you to accept the responsibilities that accompany your accomplishments. The citizens of The Gambia and the entire globe anticipate your contributions to positive change. Remember, you’re not merely graduating; you’re realizing your potential. Congratulations, and may your path be marked by purpose, advancement, and happiness! Hold fast to your sphere of influence. And once more, congratulations to the Class of 2023.
