An open letter to President Adama Barrow – High Murder Cases in The Gambia

Mr President, I offer my compliments to you and wish to express my deep concern regarding the alarming increase in murder cases throughout our beloved country, The Gambia. Despite being one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the sub-region, it seems that we are losing our good reputation.

Against this backdrop, I am writing this open letter as a concerned citizen deeply committed to the safety and well-being of our people, to inform you that urgent action is needed to address this pressing issue to ensure the safety of all.

Please be aware that the recent spike in murder cases has shaken our communities and made people feel afraid and insecure, especially the ladies who were the victims of such heinous acts. As of the last time I looked, every death is a stain on our society as well as a sorrow for the victims’ families and loved ones. The increase in violent crime jeopardizes not just the security of our people but also our aspirations to create a peaceful Gambia.

I appreciate the efforts of law enforcement agencies, particularly the Gambia Police Force, in their relentless pursuit of justice. However, there is a need for more action to stop the surge of violence that’s affecting our communities. To guarantee the safety and security of all Gambians and their properties, we must take a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach that addresses the root causes of these crimes.

Mr President, your administration needs to collaborate with stakeholders to address the socioeconomic factors that contribute to crime and violence. These factors include poverty, unemployment, and inequality. It is crucial to implement targeted interventions to uplift disadvantaged communities and provide opportunities for economic empowerment.

Provide sufficient resources, training, and support to law enforcement agencies to enable them to effectively investigate and prosecute violent crimes. It is equally important to review and strengthen existing laws and legal frameworks about crime prevention, prosecution, and victim support to ensure they are robust and effective in deterring violent crime and delivering justice for victims. Moreover, fostering closer collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities can help build trust, gather intelligence, and prevent crime through community policing initiatives and neighbourhood watch programs.

Mr President, the safety and security of our citizens are of utmost importance, and we must take swift and decisive action to address the high incidence of murders in The Gambia. I have faith in your leadership and commitment to ensuring the well-being of all Gambians. While I look forward to seeing meaningful progress towards reducing violent crime and creating a safer and more secure future for all Gambians, please accept the assurance of my consideration.
