ECOWAS says treason charges against Mohamed Bazoum of Niger is a provocation that contradicts military authorities’ willingness to restore constitutional order

The West African leaders bloc ECOWAS has said that the high treason charges against President Mouhamed Bazoum of Niger is a provocation and it contradicts the reported willingness of the military authorities’ to restore constitutional order through peaceful means.

ECOWAS made this statement in a press release issued on 14th August 2023, in which it condemned the military authorities’ move and called for the immediate release and resinstatement of President Bazoum.

ECOWAS also reiterated its position that President Mouhamed Bazoum is the democratically elected president of Niger recognized by ECOWAS and the international community.
