Meet Sanu Secka, the first Gambian to be awarded a Volleyball Legend

Sanu Secka, a Banjulian now residing in Kanifing South was last week awarded by the Gambia Volleyball Federation as a Living Legend in honour of his great achievements and contributions to the development of Volleyball in the Gambia.

Sanu began his volleyball career in 1996 when he was in primary school and later continued when he was at St. Augustine‘s Junior Secondary School known as Pa Joof where he was the school team captain from 1996 -1999.

In 1999, he was called into the National Volleyball team to participate in the Zone 2 competition held in Dakar, Senegal. In the same year, he was also selected for the Banjul Nayconf team played at the Bakau Independence Stadium, where Banjul emerged victorious.

Mr. Secka later enrolled at St. Augustine’s Senior Secondary School where he became the school captain in 2000 and won so many school competitions and trophies for the school.

During that period, he was also part of those who formed their own team in Banjul called Gorillas and were competing in the national league where they won many trophies. He later played for the Banjul Boys team, Old Jeshwang, and later Kanifing Estate.

Secka played for Banjul in 4 different NAYCONF competitions where they won three and lose one which was held in Brikama.

He ended his career playing for Gamtel/Gamcel Volleyball team. He also played for a team in Senegal called UGB UNIVERSITY GASTON BERGER in Saint Louis.

Secka played for another team in Ziguinchor in their second division league during their final games and with the help of his skills and talents, they came first and proceeded to the first division.

Last year, he became coach of the Gamtel/Gamcel team until this year he went with them through the first round and was called by the Gambia Police Force Volleyball team with an offer to be their head coach in the second round.

During the second round, he won all the teams and brought the police team to 4th position, moving them from the bottom of the table where they were stuck.

Mr. Secka is currently serving as the Coach of the Gambia Police Force Volleyball team. He is preparing to take part in a Volleyball Championship to be held in Dubai later in December this year.

Reacting to his award, Mr. Secka expressed delight to be recognised as the first person to be awarded as a Volleyball legend in The Gambia. He thanked his family, the Gambia Volleyball Federation, his coaches like Cassa Taal, teammates, friends, and all those who contributed to this success story.

He promised to support others as a coach and to keep up the momentum, as The Gambia is right now the African champions in Volleyball and indoor games.
