Ousman A. Marong, a Gambian journalist who doubles as the General Manager of Niumi FM, a privately-own radio station in Essau, Lower Niumi District of the North Bank Region (NBR), has been selected to take part in the 2nd International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA 2022).
The 2nd International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA 2022) is scheduled to take place from 13th – 15th December 2022 at the Kigali Convention Center in Kigali, Rwanda.
The conference which is expected to combine both virtual and physical presentations is organised by the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
The CDC is a specialised technical institution of the African Union and was established to support public health initiatives of Member States and strengthen the capacity of their public institutions to detect, prevent, control, and respond quickly and effectively to disease threats.
The body was established in January 2016 during the 26th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Governments and was officially launched in January 2017.
With official side events commencing on the 12th of December 2022 the theme of discussion will be: “Preparedness for Future Pandemic and Post-Pandemic Recovery: Africa at a Crossroads.”
The conference will offer a unique platform for African leaders, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to engage in science, research, technology, and policy while ushering into a new era of strengthened scientific collaboration and innovation across the continent.
Marong is the first Gambian journalist to win this year’s CPHIA Fellowship programme, and here is his reaction: “Unfortunately, for me, this year’s conference scholarship funds to cover transportation is not available at this time. I appeal to philanthropists, NGOs, and government institutions, particularly the Ministry of Health, Tourism, and Foreign Affairs, to support funding my trip. This is a great opportunity not limited to me as an individual. It‘s for the nation at large. Imagine among the lots of journalists across the continent I am the lucky winner from The Gambia. CPHIA is an annual conference that aims to place health at the center of the continent’s Agenda 2063 – The Africa We Want. The inaugural conference, CPHIA 2022, brought together over 12,000 public health stakeholders from across the continent and the world to share scientific findings, collaborate on research and implementation, and chart a shared course towards a more secure future for Africa.”
