Going armed in public is a chargeable offence, Gambia Police warn citizens

STATEMENT: THE POLICE WARN AGAINST CARRYING WEAPONS IN PUBLIC

IGP Abdoulie Sanyang

The Gambia Police Force noted with great concern the rising domestic crimes mainly resulting from people illegally carrying weapons in public.

Of recent, the police have received several reported crimes involving alleged suspects using weapons in altercations with their victims resulting in death. Keeping weapons in one’s possession in public space is a chargeable offense as enshrined in section 79 of the criminal code of The Gambia.

Presently, some suspects who are allegedly responsible for such crimes are arrested and helping the police with the investigations, while some others are on the run.

Police investigators are working round the clock to ensure speedy and successful investigations and prosecutions of the recent spate of domestic murder cases and other criminal incidents of violence.

The General public is assured of the police’s unwavering resolve in mitigating and preventing crimes at all times. The support of the public in this crusade is critical. Meanwhile, the general maintenance and stability of our communities require concerted efforts of both the Police and the public. We, therefore, entreat all and sundry to be law-abiding and report to the nearest Police Station any suspected crimes or committed crimes in their localities.
