President George Weah thumbs up Gambia’s role in ECOMOG during the civil crises in Liberia

President George Weah of Liberia has recalled with gratitude, The Gambia’s role in ECOMOG during the civil crises in Liberia. He thanked The Gambia and all other ECOWAS countries for their collective efforts in Liberia during the civil crises which brought them the peace they now enjoy as a country.

President Weah made these remarks on Tuesday, 17th May 2022 at Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, while receiving the Credentials of the Gambian Ambassador to Liberia, His Excellency Alieu K. Jammeh.

Ambassador Jammeh who was accompanied to Liberia’s Executive Mansion in Monrovia by the Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Bulli Dibba, is also expected to oversee Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast.

It could be recalled that the first Liberian civil war was an internal conflict in Liberia from 1989 to 1997. The conflict killed around 200, 000 people, which led to the involvement of ECOWAS and the UN.

After receiving Ambassador Jammeh’s Letters of Credence, President George Weah welcomed The Gambia’s top diplomat to Liberia and said:

“Mr. Ambassador, our two countries have enjoyed cordial relations for many years. It may be recalled that the late former President of Liberia, Dr. William R. Tolbert, and the late former President of The Gambia, Sir Dawda Jawara, pursued close diplomatic collaboration, and were highly instrumental in settling disputes in our sub-region.“

He added: “We also recall with gratitude, your country’s role in ECOMOG during the civil crises in Liberia. The collective efforts of countries in ECOWAS brought us the peace we now enjoy as a country.“

“As we celebrate another milestone in our relations today, by the presentation of your credentials, we are optimistic that the already strong ties of friendship that exist between our two countries and peoples will be further enhanced and deepened for our common good,“ President Weah remarked.

He expressed optimism about the bilateral relations between The Gambia and Liberia, saying that they look forward to working closely with the Gambia government in the areas of Agriculture, Trade, Forestry, and Tourism, which he believes will create jobs for the people of the two countries, especially the youths.

He assured Ambassador Jammeh of Liberia’s commitment to the long-standing relations between The Gambia and Liberia.
