Lawyer Melville Robertson Roberts’s case against Attorney General, IGP resumes

The case of Lawyer Melville Robertson Roberts against the Attorney General, 1st Respondent and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), 2nd Respondent has on 16th March 2023 resumed at the High Court in Brikama.

Although the case could not proceed last week, it was adjourned to 27th April 2023 at 10 am.

The case was stalled for some time because there were costs that were ordered in favour of Melville Robertson Roberts and against the Attorney General and the IGP, LTN has learnt. The court ordered that unless those costs are paid, it will not hear the case involving the AG and IGP. It is now confirmed that the Registrar of the court is processing the costs awarded to Melville Robertson Roberts and the case has resumed.

Readers would recall that Lawyer Melville Robertson Roberts had in April last year sued the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General for refusing to return his mother’s and wife’s jewelleries worth over fifty thousand United States Dollars ($50,000).

According to the originating summons obtained by LamToro News, Melville brought the case pursuant to sections 22 and 37 of the Constitution seeking court enforcement of his fundamental human right. He said the police break into his bedroom and took those jewelleries as well as his personal properties – mobile phones and laptop computers.

He asked the high court to make an order directing the Inspector General of Police to immediately return the said jewellery items to him or pay the sum of 50,000 United States Dollars being the market value at the time for the said jewellery items. He wants the high court to make an order awarding him reasonable compensation for the arbitrary deprivation of his property by the Inspector General of Police.
