General Mbaye Cissé, Chief of Staff of the President of the Republic, has been appointed the new Chief of General Staff, Senegal’s government newspaper Le Soleil confirmed. He replaces General Cheikh Wade.
According to Senegalese media, General Mbaye Cissé is a graduate of the eighth class of the National School for Active Officers in Thies (1988-1990). His career is divided between the operational functions specific to his weapon, the artillery, and the joint functions in the general staff.
After having climbed all the command levels of his arm, and at the end of his command time as chef de corps, he was assigned in 2009 to the General Staff of the Armed Forces as head of the General Studies Division (prospective studies), a position he left in 2012 to join the UN mission in Congo as deputy to the head of the security sector reform cell. From 2013 to 2015, he was appointed Deputy Senior Officer to the Commander of the Military Zone No. 3 in Kaolack, before joining the Army Staff as Chief of the Human Resources Chain. From September 2016 to August 2019, he commanded the Military Zone No. 2 in Saint-Louis before taking up the position of Chief of Staff of the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces until June 2020. He was Director General of CHEDS from 2020 to 2023.
