The new Sanyang Police Station worth D2.8M sponsored by Dr. Abubacarr Jawara, CEO of GACH Global, was on Saturday inaugurated.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Abubacarr Jawara, the GACH Global boss expressed delight at this historic event marking the inauguration of the D2.8M building he sponsored.
He said: “As a patriotic citizen, it is my responsibility to take part in my nation’s development especially when it comes to the security of my country. This is why I did not think twice when the thought of participating in my country’s development came to my mind.
I was displeased when I received the news of the incident that happened at the Sanyang police station which was unfortunate and scary. A police station is a security place and when it is threatened then the people are equally at risk because it serves as a security center for its people.“
He explained the reason he sponsored the construction of the new police station, following the vandalization of the old station by angry youths of Sanyang sometime in March 2021.
Dr. Jawara added: “I deemed it very necessary to play my part in helping to bring back the life of the police station without expecting any favors from anybody but I did it out of the love I have for my country The Gambia. You will all agree with me that the best commodity we export as Gambians is peace, so anything done to maintain that peace is never a waste but a profitable investment. This Sanyang police station is not only for the people of Sanyang but for everyone in The Gambia whether a Gambian or not. So instead of planning to cause destruction to it, we should protect it from harm because it protects us from harm.“
He also advised the youths to engage themselves in profitable works to develop themselves and stay away from any form of violence, adding that the damages caused by violence can be very severe to one’s life and country.
On his part, Commissioner of Police West Coast Region, Pateh Jallow, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police Abdoulie Sanyang, reiterated the duties of the police to protect lives and properties.
“The newly-built station will be a hybrid station which will perform the function of both Police Intervention Unit and General Duty simultaneously operating to combat crimes within Sanyang and across the Kombo South coastal belt. The inauguration of this new police facility in the Kombo South settlement is expected to improve the Gambia Police Force’s move to expand its community policing initiative in more communities across the country,“ he said.
The West Coast Regional Police Commissioner called on the community of Sanyang and its surroundings to cooperate and support the police station to provide and render effective and efficient services to the community.
Commissioner Jallow on behalf of The IGP also extended gratitude to the benefactor Abubacarr Jawara, the alkalo of Sanyang Village, Councillor of Sanyang ward, the VDC, Rtd ASP Haruna Bojang, the gallant officers and other security forces for their role in the maintenance of peace and security in the area.
Chief Inspector Alieu Jamanka, deputy spokesperson of the Gambia Police Force chaired the ceremony.
