The All People’s Party (APP-Sobeyaa) expresses profound scepticism regarding the true objectives and outcomes of the Gambian government’s Circular Migration Programme with Spain. We question whether this initiative genuinely benefits Gambians or merely exploits the aspirations of our youth, potentially infringing upon their rights and dignity. The government’s lack of transparency and accountability in this program raises serious doubts about whether it serves ordinary citizens or a privileged few. The APP-Sobeyaa warns against what many perceive as modern exploitation disguised as economic opportunity.

The government’s failure to disclose critical details about the programme is nothing short of a betrayal of the Gambian youth. It is now evident that the government was fully aware that only a maximum of 350 positions were available under this initiative. Yet, it failed to clearly communicate this fact to the public, allowing over 10,100 young Gambians to apply, each paying a minimum of D3,000 for passports, a staggering total of over D30 million collected by the government. Many of these applicants, struggling to afford the passport fee, were left with dashed hopes and financial burdens. The recent announcement that only 39 youths were selected represents a devastating blow to thousands of young Gambians whose dreams of opportunity were exploited.

This lack of full disclosure reeks of misrepresentation of grave proportions. Had the government been transparent about the limited number of positions, it is highly likely that many youths would not have applied, sparing them financial strain and emotional disappointment. The APP-Sobeyaa demands answers: Did the government have a duty to inform our youth of the slim chances of selection, or was its primary concern profiting from the D30 million in passport fees? Such actions call into question the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens.

The APP-Sobeyaa demands complete transparency regarding the Circular Migration Programme, including detailed information on the number of applicants, the selection criteria, associated costs, and who stands to gain financially. The government must clarify why so few individuals were selected from thousands of applicants and outline the support available for those not chosen. Furthermore, we call for an immediate suspension of the programme pending a comprehensive review to ensure it provides valuable opportunities without exploiting or disadvantaging our citizens. The government must guarantee fairness in the selection process, protect workers’ rights, and ensure that wages and working conditions meet acceptable standards.

The APP-Sobeyaa stands with the Gambian people in demanding a government that prioritises integrity, accountability, and the dignity of its citizens. We will not tolerate the exploitation of our youth’s aspirations for the benefit of a select few. We call for a Gambia where opportunity is genuine, transparent, and equitable.

For a Just and Dignified Gambia!
