Police have reported the shooting of a suspect in his buttocks on Saturday, 15th June 2024 while trying to escape control from the patrol team of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) in Fass Njaga Choi, North Bank Region.
A statement from the Gambia Police Force disclosed that Momodou Jallow, a suspect was seen by the PIU patrol team in Fass Njaga Choi around 3am – 4am on Saturday, loitering around a Mauritanian shop.
“When officers requested him to submit to a search, he refused and fled, carrying a bag. In the ensuing engagement, he was shot in the buttocks. After surrendering, Jallow was arrested. A search revealed three bundles of suspected cannabis in his possession.
He was taken to the Amdalai Police Station for processing and subsequently transported to Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul for medical treatment,“ the police said.
The police further stated that in recent times, the Fass Njagga Choi area has experienced an uptick in cross-border criminal activities, leading to multiple attacks on police officers (PIU Personnel).
“In response, PIU deployment has increased patrols to curb these incidents and maintain security,“ the police clarified.
Regarding the fate of the suspect Momodou Jallow, the police said he is reported to be in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the buttock.
“This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by police in managing security threats in the region, particularly those involving drug trafficking and cross-border crime,“ the police report concludes.
