Kebba Jallow PPP Leader
The Late Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara

Date: 10th May 2024
The People’s Progressive Party expresses its gratitude to the family of the late Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara for their thoughtful initiative to commemorate the 100th year of his birth on the 16th ofMay 1924. Recognizing Sir Dawda’s remarkable leadership, PPP acknowledges his pivotal role in fostering national unity, political tolerance, good governance, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of not only human and people rights but also animal welfare, and the conservation of
the fauna and flora, reflecting his strong advocacy for environmental protection.

Sir Dawda was the first leader of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), a political organization that
was formed 65 years ago. Under his leadership, the PPP government achieved internal self-
government for The Gambia only four years after its formation. The PPP broke ranks from older
established parties in 1960 by calling for independence in the historic 1960 Manifesto. By 1965,
The Gambia had achieved sovereign independent status with a voice in the councils of the world
and all the trappings of nationhood.

Sir Dawda’s leadership was guided by the principles of open multiparty democracy through
persuasion rather than coercion, conviction rather than fear, through a genuine determination to
ensure a just, orderly, and modern society despite the problems of limited resources and a hostile
world economic environment. His legacy continues to inspire the PPP and all Gambians to strive
for unity, democracy, and progress in the country.

The PPP leadership calls on all members of the party to pray and support the initiative of the Jawara
Family, which aims to celebrate the life and work of Sir Dawda. The leadership also appeals to all
Gambians to grace the occasion and be part of this important commemoration. The PPP would like
to acknowledge and express its gratitude to the Gambian government and the President for their
support of this significant occasion.

Signed
Kebba E Jallow
Secretary General and Party Leader
People’s Progressive Party (PPP)
