PRESS RELEASE:

The Malick Jallow Foundation for Children (MJFC) joins the rest of the world in commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on International Human Rights Day on 10th December 2023. The day is usually set aside to assess progress in the implementation of the UDHR and in the struggle to ensure that the inextricable link between respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and socio-economic advancement and sustainable development is fundamentally harnessed.

In The Gambia, significant strides have been made recently in strengthening institutions in the frontline for the protection and promotion of human rights including the setting up of an independent National Commission of Human Rights. We have also seen fundamental strides with respect to judicial pronouncements to advance the respect of fundamental human rights and freedoms through ground breaking and progressive court rulings.

It is our hope that this trajectory would continue going from strength to strength and that we live in  a society where respect for fundamental rights and freedoms is not just a mere slogan or pious declaration but indeed one that we live in, live through and live by on a daily basis. As a foundation, we remain committed to contributing our quota in ensuring greater respect for fundamental rights and freedoms mainly through advocating for the protection and promotion of the rights of the child.

Finally we urge the government to actively ensure greater, timely and more effective compliance with judicial rulings and decisions providing redress for victims of human rights violations in The Gambia.

END.
