The Minister of the Interior of Senegal Antoine Diome has disclosed reasons why opposition leader Ousman Sonko’s lawyer Juan Branco, a French-Spanish, was denied entry into Senegal upon his arrival at the Blaise Diagne International Airport in Dakar on Thursday.

“Indeed, Mr. Branco had published, before his arrival at the international airport Blaise Diagne of Dakar, a post on social networks (Facebook and Twitter, dated March 28, 2023) where he called His Excellency Mr. President of the Republic Macky Sall a tyrant, and also made a call for insurrection in our country.

In view of this unacceptable behaviour on the part of a foreign citizen, he was refused entry into the national territory,” reads a statement from the Minister of Interior Antoine Diome.

He said the airport police did not give the Franco-Spanish lawyer any room to manoeuvre when he came to reinforce the pool of lawyers defending Ousmane Sonko, who was given a two-month suspended prison sentence in the case against Minister Mame Mbaye Niang.

“However, the Ministry of the Interior wishes to recall and clarify the attachment of the Senegalese state to the values of ‘hospitality and Teranga’, ” the statement concludes.
