The German Police Support Team (GPST) handed over a total of 50 walkie-talkies with accessories to the Gambia Police Force (GPF) on Wednesday, 22 February 2023, to support the Police Intervention Unit’s (PIU) operational efforts in the aftermath of the Fass Njaga Choi incident, which left one PIU Officer shot and injured.

Since the incident, the PIU has stepped up their operations in the North Bank Region to not only search for the perpetrators and missing weapon, but also to ensure the safety of the citizens. Communication is a critical component of proper law enforcement work, especially in public safety operations.
Therefore, in order to further build the capacity of the GPF and directly support the ongoing operations of the PIU in the North Bank Region, the German Police Support Team extended its assistance at very short notice to support the Gambia Police Force with much needed communications equipment.
At a small handover ceremony in Kanifing, the German Police Support Team presented a total of 50 walkie-talkies and accessories to the Police Intervention Unit. The radios were immediately deployed and used in the field.
This short-term support by the German Police Support Team underlines the continued commitment to the Gambia Police Force and its efforts to reform the security sector.
The German Police Support Team in The Gambia is a bilateral development aid capacity-building project, framed by a joint Declaration of Intent between the Ministries of Interior of The Republic of The Gambia 🇬🇲 and the German Federal State of Baden-Württemberg 🇩🇪. Implementing partner agencies are the Gambia Police Force and the Baden-Württemberg State Police.
The project is aimed at capacity building and professionalisation of the Gambian Police Force since 2018.
