Last week was a great one for The Gambia, especially for women. Some influential women in the country made everyone proud by lifting the Gambian flag higher in various ways through their area of work or participation in the country‘s development process, thus becoming role models in their various domains.
LTN celebrates these women and indeed all other Gambian women for their bravery, patriotism, courage, and hard work. These few selected women have triumphed in various ways and are indeed the Nation’s Prides.
Coincidentally, their success stories happened in October, a month set aside to fight against breast cancer. These women and many more should be celebrated and encouraged as they have lifted the bar to higher heights both at home and abroad.
Below are the few women selected by LTN as the Nation’s Pride for the month of October 2022.
Dr. Fatou Bom Bensouda (High Commissioner in London):
She received the Bruce J Klantsky Award 2022 in recognition of her contribution to global justice. She was invited by Dean Michael Scharf and the Case Western Reserve University School of Law to deliver the annual Klantsky Endowed Lecture 2022 and to receive the Bruce J Klantsky Award for her extraordinary contributions to global Justice.
Dr. Fatou Bom Bensouda is a former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and currently serves as the Gambia’s High Commissioner in The United Kingdom.
ASP Mariama Barry (Officer Gambia Police Force):
She was awarded in Sudan for her contribution to the transformation of the Sudanese Police Force under the UN Peacekeeping mission. ASP Mariama Barry is a young female leader in a male-dominated leadership field but has demonstrated her skills and abilities beyond doubt.
Undoubtedly, she is one of the most focused, well-trained, and principled young female officers of the Gambia Police Force. ASP Barry’s humility, professional conduct, integrity, respect for the rule of law, and respect for humanity is beyond imagination. She is a bright example for Gambian female officers.
Nenneh Freda Gomez (Women’s rights Advocate and Activist):
She is the Country Director of Global Hearts of Medical Mission. Nenneh is an advocate and activist fighting for women’s empowerment. She was invited last week as a keynote speaker at the 3rd edition of the National Girls Summit in Sierra Leone. She was recently awarded in Nigeria for her role in women’s empowerment in Africa. Nenneh also paid courtesy calls on the First Lady Fatima Mada Bio and the Gambia’s High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, HE Alieu K. Jammeh during her trip to Sierra Leone.
Hon. Fatoumata Njie (Touma), NAM for Banjul South:
She is another brave female activist fighting for women’s empowerment. Hon. Njie had last week challenged the Deputy Speaker of the country’s National Assembly Hon. Seedy S.K Njie on his opinion on the AKI deaths in the country recently. In Njie’s opinion, the Deputy Speaker was misinforming the National Assembly and she challenged it seriously, calling it a ‘Lie‘.
The Speaker of the Assembly Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta urged her to retract such words but she refused and walked out of the Assembly session.
Many Gambians heaped praises on Hon. Touma Njie for standing by the truth in defense of the citizenry.
Dr. Satang Nabaneh (Young Legal Luminary):
Dr. Satang Nabaneh is a young Gambian legal scholar and consultant. Recently, she launched a book titled: “The Gambia in Transition Towards a New Constitutional Order”. The launching was attended by Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow, the Minister of Youths and Sports Hon. Bakary Badjie and a host of other dignitaries.
LTN salutes these “Gambian Women Of The Moment“, indeed they are The Nation’s Pride.
