Profile: Serign Modou Njie, Gambia’s New Defence Minister

Sering Modou Njie is the Gambia’s new Minister of Defence. He was born on 14th April 1970 in Medina Baye Mass in the North Bank Region. He is happily married and the union is blessed with children. Sering Modou started his academic journey in Medina Sering Mass and proceeded to Nasir Ahmadiyya Muslim High School where he obtained his GCE O’ Level Certificate.

He went further to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science at the American Metropolitan University, Republic of Turkey and a Master’s Degree in International relations at the Near East University, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Sering Modou Njie joined the Gambia Armed Forces in December 1989 as a private soldier rising through different ranks before retiring as a Brigadier General in April 2011.

During his military career, Sering Modou Njie has gone through various capacity-building programs and trainings that have impacted in his career development over the years. During the period of 1996, Sering Modou Njie went through numerous specialized military courses at the prestigious Institutes of Air Safety Pakistan Air Force, Masroor Air Force Base Pakistan, Jungle Warfare Training Army Combat Training School, FU Hsing Kang College, Political Warfare Bureau Ministry of National Defence, Republic of China and Taiwan.

Based on merit, Sering Modou received several awards in his service to the nation. During the period 1997 to 2009, Sering Modou received 11 prestigious Awards from various notable national and international Organizations/Institutions relating to Military domain. In his service to the nation, Sering Modou has been decorated by the Gambia Armed Forces with the following medals; General Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, and Army Award (Plaque for best Assault Course construction).

Sering Modou Njie started his career in 1999 when he was appointed as a Staff Office Grade 2 (SO2) Public Relations, Gambia Armed Forces, and Adjutant State Guard Bn. In 2004 he became the Aide-De-Camp to the Former President of the Republic of The Gambia where he was later reappointed as the Aide-De-Camp to the former First Lady of the Republic of The Gambia in 2005. From 2005 to 2009, Sering Modou served as the Commanding Officer State Guards Bn and Director Inspectorate Unit, Defence Headquarters. Between the years of 2009 to 2010, he served as the Contingent Commander, GAMCOY 9, UNAMID Darfur, Sudan. In March 2010 Sering Modou was appointed as the Chief of Republican National Guard & General Officer Commanding State Guards Battalion in March 2011.

This was followed by his appointment as the Deputy Head of Mission, Gambia High Commission New Delhi, India in March 2011, Deputy Head of Mission, Gambia Embassy Ankara in May 2012, Ambassador, Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary in December 2020. In May 2022, Sering Modou Njie received his appointment as the Minister of Defence of the Republic of the Gambia.

Sering Modou Njie has a wide range of interest in Organizing training programs for Officers of the Gambia Armed Forces on a wide range of topics, including leadership principles & practices, professional development & monitoring, military training and readiness, management principles and practices, early warning systems and the role of GAF in National defence and security.

His Hobbies include Reading and Sports.
