UN Human Rights Commission visits Gambia to meet returned migrants, stakeholders

A delegation from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is currently in the Gambia to monitor the human rights situation of Gambian migrants who returned from Libya.

The delegation also had direct interaction with recent returnees from Libya to know their experiences, and gaps that exist in their protection and to proffer recommendations.

The OHCHR delegation comprised the following officials: Mr. Benjamin Lewis – Human Rights Officer, Migration Unit, Ms. Maria Stoffregen – Human Rights Officer, Migration Unit, and Mrs. Mariana, OHCHR mission in Dakar.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mrs. Saffie Sankareh – Farage, and the Director of Diaspora and Migration Directorate Mr. Musa Camara on Monday 25 April 2022, received the  OHCHR delegation. In attendance were representatives of the Ministries of Justice, Trade, Health, and Agriculture who are also key stakeholders in the protection,  welfare, and reintegration of migrant returnees.
