Sami Karantaba Police Station, 2 others to be built, IGP reveals

Abdoulie Sanyang, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Gambia Police Force, has disclosed that three new police stations will be built at Essau in the North Bank Region, Old Yundum in the West Coast Region and Sami Karantaba in the Central River Region north.

The IGP made this revelation on Wednesday, 22nd June 2022, while responding to a question posed to him by Honorable Bakary Badjie, National Assembly Member for Foni Bintang Karanai in the West Coast Region. Hon. Badjie had asked the country’s police chief, about the conditions of the police stations and cells where people are detained.

Hon. Badjie posed this question during a session of the Human Rights and Constitutional Matters meeting with Security Institutions on Human Rights Compliance and Situation in the country, at the National Assembly in Banjul.

In response, the IGP said they are discussing with UNDP and their partners, adding that the three new stations to build will include Sami Karantaba, Essau, and Old Yundum.

He also revealed that the conditions of the police stations will be greatly improved as they are planning to create new detention rooms for men, women, and juveniles but would be separated.

“Our plan is to have detention rooms which are clean and fit for human beings. We will also create a separate station for Juvenille to put them in better conditions but all these require a lot of money and I think our budget should be increased to cover such expansion projects,“ he remarked.
